Edward I and the Stone of Scone (or is it?)

Edward was born at Westminster and known as ‘Longshanks’ becasue he was so tall.He had a wife Eleanor of Castile and was actually at war with her by his side when he found out he would be King. Edward I managed to claim Wales and named his son the first ‘Prince of Wales’. A title that the current Prince Charles holds. This was the first time Wales was not independent. Edward also tried to claim Scotland and seized the ‘Stone of Scone’ which represented the Scottish monarchy. Every monarch who has been crowned since has been crowned on the Stone of Scone which has a special chair, King Edward’s chair, held at Westminster Abbey. In 1996 the Stone of Scone or Stone of Destiny as it is often known was returned to Scotland. You can visit it at Edinburgh Castle. At the next coronation The Stone of Scone will be reunited with King Edward’s Chair at Westminster.

In 1950 a group of Scottish students tried to return the Stone to Scotland. Not only did they break it but there is a possibility they may have hidden the original!  There is a movie about the story called Stone of Destiny.
