William II was killed by an arrow during a hunting party. His brother Henry who was also in the Forest, rushed off to Winchester Cathedral to be crowned Henry I. Everyone in the New Forest was too scared to move the body. There is now a stone that can be visited which shows the place where this happened. William I created the New Forest as a Royal hunting Ground. He cleared lots of homes and families and it was said it was cursed as it resulted in three Royal Deaths
