George VI was not prepared to be a King. His older brother had had all the training and preparation, however when he abdicated it was down to George VI to step up. He was shy and had a stammer which made public speaking very difficult. He was actually called Albert and was known as Bertie to his family but after the abdication he thought that being a King George would show stability. It also honoured his father George V. After the coronation there was WWII and the King was seen to be taking his part. The Royal family stayed in London which gained them a lot of support.
The children won’t leave without me; I won’t leave without the King; and the King will never leave
During the King’s reign there were lots of changes; The National Health Service, The Welfare State, Independence for India and other industries were nationalised such as coal, railways, the roads, the Bank of England, Electricity, Gas, Steel.
George VI died from lung cancer from smoking. People then did not know how dangerous it was and some people even thought it would help with his stammer.
